Ariau
Amazon Towers History & Philosophy. First opened in
1987, this unique eco-friendly hotel and resort was built by Dr.
Francisco Ritta Bernardino under the inspiration of the
legendary oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, who explored the
fabled region over 25 years ago. In 1982, Jacques Cousteau and
his team explored the Amazon, and while in Manaus stayed at the
Mônaco Hotel where he encountered the hotel’s owner, Dr.
Ritta. Inspired and enlightened by Cousteau’s ideas and
philosphy, Dr. Ritta decided to build Ariau Amazon Towers to
protect and defend the beauty and fragility of the Amazon
Jungle.
Cousteau's declarations during those early days sounded like a
premonition: "Today the world is concerned about nuclear
war, but this threat will disappear. The war of the future will
be between those who defend nature and those who destroy it. The
Amazon will be in the eye of the hurricane. Scientists,
politicians, and artists will land here to see what is being
done to the forest". Dr. Ritta took these words seriously,
and in 1986 - three years before the fall of the Berlin Wall
buried the nuclear threat - Dr. Ritta started building Ariau
Amazon Towers on the banks of the Rio Negro.
The construction followed the native technique of building on
stilts in the treetops. Utilizing the craftsmanship of the
native people of the Amazon, construction began around July
1985, and one year later the first tower of Ariaú Amazon Towers
welcomed guests. Originally an intimate jungle hotel with four
suites, Ariau Amazon Towers has become the largest tree top
hotel in world, with 268 rooms connected by a catwalk trail of
over 5 miles in the heart of the Amazon.
Ariau Amazon Towers - Celebrity Style. With its
amazingly stunning location and unsurpassed amenities, Ariau
Towers served as filming site for the Hollywood movie
"Anaconda" and the hit reality TV show "Survivor:
The Amazon." Our beautiful resort has accommodated
world-wide celebrities and famous personalities, including Bill
Gates, Susan Sarandon, Roman Polanski, Charlton Heston, The
Royal Family of Spain, The King of Morroco, Royal Family of
Sweden, Jacques Cousteau, and Jean Michel Cousteau. [Top]
